Hi, I am a Newbie on the site, but have kept fish on and off since the 7o`s , I have been without my fish for a decade now, but am starting again with a 4ft
setup. I read ( some time ago ) that peat can be used in a tropical freshwater setup.
I would appreciate advice from anyone on the matter. I presume it would limit the type of fish I could keep if I used it at all.

I'm suprised no-one else has answered this yet.

It is indeed still used for peat filtration, mainly of tetra and other "blackwater" fish breeding tanks to replicate the natural acidity etc found in the wild.

Many people however have changed to additives that can be added to the tank to replicate the conditions without using the peat itself. This is because there is a lot of worry about the source of peat and the distruction of habitat it is causing by removing peat. (just ask the gardeners nationwide who will no longer be able to buy peat products from 2010 onwards - maybe 2011 i'm not sure)

Thanks for that, with starting over again, I would like to do something different , so this site is great for information and the experience of others is overwhelming.
