Wat does the true Rotkeil look like ? Ive been checking website after website all day and im confused. If you look up wild caught rotkeil it will show a fish that is a more silvery colour, but the fish you see in the trade are more bluey in colour. So wat is the true rotkeil. Are the ones you see in the lfs just a fish that has been messed with to make it more attractive to us fish keepers. So what is a true rottie meant to look like ?

Well mine look like this.

My Female in before spawning colours

2 days after spawning a little stressed from spawning, this is what I would expect to see one like in the shop a little stressed.

I have no idea I am afraid, I bought them from a friend who got them from a shop.

true proper rotkeil sevs are more vibrantly colured around the face/shoulders and the anal fin is yellow as opposed to the browny orange colour seen on most rotkeils seen. this is because most sevs sold as "rotkeils are indeed rotkeil/green cross. hnce the dulled down colours and anal fin colouration. true wild rotkeils are indeed a sight to behold .

The reason I ask is that I bought my Rotkeil as wild caught from my lfs. Now it doesn,t bother me if they,re wild caught or not but it does bother me that people arent sraight with me when selling me things  . Now I don,t honestly think my lfs are at fault if they,re not wild caught as I believe they are under the impression they are. I have photos on this forum from the day we got them but they are a bit rough looking. I,ll try and get a photo of them thats up to date and let you see what I mean about their colouring. You,ve already seen it star so you,ll know what I mean about their colouring. Cheers for your replies, the old photos are under the heading sexing rotkeil.

They look much the same as ours. Are they meant to keep their last bar coloured all the time, cause these ones we have seem to have no bars for most of the time and then the nxt time you walk past they are really dark with the bars showing, i know all bars except the last dulls with age but these fish are like chameleons and change at the drop of a hat.

when my rotkeil is stressed all the bars are dark and the silvery sides go dark too. thankfully since a lot of fish moves the rotkeil is almost always as it is in the picture. the last bar is always showing :good:

The last bar on ours only shows every now and then. I can,t understand that as I was always under the impression it was meant to show all the time
