Me again. How big does the rotkeil usually get.... it is rotkeil not rotkiel I forgot as I'm typing. I'm finding variation in my research between 7 and 10 inches.

Thank you.

How much would a 6" breeding pair of these be? I am after some. Cheers

I have seen breeding pairs for sale, cheapest around £50 upto £80, cheapest option is get some youngsters around 6 and let them pair up and sell off the others. Unless they are old enough to sex.

Hi, thanks for that. I am fairly new to severums. I have known they are there and even owned a few in passing. Due to my ignorance I wasn't aware of the different types (besides gold or green obviously). I am guessing that rotkeil (german for "red shoulder"?) and red shouldered are the same? Are red spotted/ red shouldered different fish? I have seen a pair marked as red spotted and they were pretty stunning but they are £80 which seemed a little steep to say the least.
Please forgive my severum ignorance as I have been keeping Tanganyikans and have forgotten pretty much everything else!

Check out this thread... the different severums are explained

Ok thanks mate. In my infinite (lack of) wisdom I didn't even know that they reached different sizes!

Rotkeils are red shouldered severums, the do not grow as big as the red spot, gold, & green. If you are interested in getting some Rotkeils I have around 40 babies 2" I am selling. There were in the classified section, I havn't bumped up the add for a while. I still have the parent fish too for you to look at.

Star, I wish I could get yours.... do you think they would like to live in California?
I just think it would be a weee bit expensive to get them here.

just a random question but do juve rotkeils not have the red markings on them i have seen some that are about the size of a 50p coin and they are just green do they get their colour when they get bigger

When small they look a lot like normal greens, once they get to about 3-4" you see the colours coming through nicely

I got mine from Star, it's a shame you're not close, they're lovely fish :)

At that sort of size you should just see the blue tinge to their faces and yellow in the fins.
One of mine at 50p sort of size.

I've got some Rotkeils or Hero sp Red Shoulder and it does take a while until they color up but once they do they are great.

I had two couples for a while in same tank, now only one pair left I sold the other once:

A short movie from my tiny fry feediing on Brine shrimps:
