Hi i have had a pond for a few years now and not added no new fish for two years. Last summer i noticed that my two large goldfish had some kind of lump one fish had a larger one on the head and the other smaller lump on his side they had already been in the pond over a year but was strange how they was added to pond at the same time NO OTHER FISH HAD OR HAVE LUMPS. I put some treament in the pond to kill bacterial infection and did not really see them much more as they was off at the bottom of pond for winter. Last few days it looks like my fish are breeding they all look happy all are feeding like normal nothing seems wrong but when puting some floating pellets in to get them to come up i can see the lumps on both fish are still there. The fish with the larger lump now looks the size of a very small pea ( the fish is a very big goldfish ) the other goldfish lump is very small on the side of the body its very small not even half the size of the larger fish lump. The lumps look like there under the skin it dont look like white spot the lump has no colour at tip its just a lump under the skin. I have a few indoor tanks warm and cold water with small and large fish never seen nothing like this. What is strange to me is the fish seem 100% there still greedy with there food ( eating fine ) , There not rubbing on anything to try and rub the lumps there just being normal and there 100% not at top of water trying to take in air , All the fish are fine. If anyone out there has had anything like this before please please could you give me some idea on what you think it could be its hard to take photos of the fish. Any harmless treatments i could try ? I have been told cooking salt but have never used this before ?

Definitely don't treat for something if you don't know what it is. Cooking salt should not be used on goldfish. Sea salt or aquarium salt is good though :) Do you have a photo of the lumps?

Do the lumps look sort of waxy? It could be carp pox, which is unsightly and incurable, but is harmless to the fish, a bit like warts on people.

I had that once, only one of 3 fish had lumps on their sides, it could be an ulcer. but yes we do need pictures

That is how i was going to describe it like a underskin wart. Prob a silly thing to ask but carp pox on a goldfish ? and can it spreed ? but like i did say fish seems 100% normal and where you say this is harmless maybe

I always treat water to make safe. I was more asking about something to treat for bacteria to add as alrounder not to just put any old treatment in in hope of it doing somthing if that makes sense. Could i use sea salt for bacteria clean up if so how much per litre ?

Hi just took a photo the best i can hope it is ok. You can see the lump in middle of his head ? you can also see his tank mate next to him with the very small lump.

It is really hard to tell from those pics (don't worry, I know how hard it is to photograph fish!); I'd still put my money on carp pox though; goldfish are carp, btw.

Thanks for geting back to me , Can carp pox spread to other fish ? as other fish all seem fine ? I will try and get better photos and will read up more on carp pox now thanks again

My ma and pa have one in their pond just like this - it hasn't affected him at all, he's been like it a few years ago now... and now he's called Mr Nobbles.
