Im not 100% sure. i have heard that females have more purple stomachs and you could assume that the males have longer dorsal fins when mature.

however i have a friend who has a mated pair and the colour from on stomachs are the same and the dorsal fins are very similar.

if you have 2 males then one will naturally e more colourful and you may even find that the less dominant males dorsal stays small like how you could expect a females.

hopefully spome one more helpful will come along and clear things up

The left one is definitely a male GBR. There are now blue spots showing through that black spot behind the eyes and the dorsal fin is 'spikey' towards the face.

Now the right one, to be honest it looks like a bolivian ram to me. But I could be totally wrong here, might just be a very young GBR. But yes, the left one is deffo a male.

there both defo german blues the one on the right could also be a male just less coloured and mature due to the dominant fish keeping him in his place. do they fight?

Thanks for the quick replies! Yeah I thought the left one was male he's got such great coloring too, you can't see in this pic but he has a black spot in the middle of his face too! They are both gbr as the lfs I got them from are petty knowledgeable plus they had Bolivia there too so hopefully they are both gbr :/ lol.

Lloyd I had the same thing with my old mated pair, the female looked like a typical male! She had a really spiked dorsal too.

I can't tell if they fight or just show off. I've only had them two days. They don't generally pay loads of attention to eachother but sometimes they nip a bit and flare up, but its difficult to tell as this is the same behaviour my old pair displayed before pairing up.

Anyone else? I'll try and get some more photos of the right one to see is we can get a better idea.

The are definitely both GBR.

I think they might be two females, although I'm not 100%. The trick is to look at the back point of the dorsal and anal fins; in males they're pointed and reach out past the start of the tail, while in females they're rounded and stop where the tail starts.

Finnage is much more reliable than colouration, as rams can be so variable in colour due to dominance, decor, breeding etc.

To be honest its a tricky one and in reality your probably best to sit back and wait as they still are young and there fins look like they have a bit of growing to do
