I came home last night and carried out my daily fish census! One of my albino tiger barbs has developed a swollen lump on his bottom jaw, almost looks like he has massive lips! He is not his usual self and the swelling is very red and inflamed, although it doesn't look like it is an open wound. He is still eating. He also looks at though his spine is slightly curved, I have never noticed this before and am concerned this suggests something more serious is wrong.
One of my gold barbs has developed a red sore around his anus, it doesn't seem to bother him, he is still eating but was being picked on by another gold barb but not in a malicious way, more the other fish was just nudging him if he became quiet!
I have been fishless cycling my new tank and that has now completed so have transferred the healthy fish to the new tank and left the two poorly barbs in the old tank (15 gallons). The water stats are fine, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 10-20. Temperature is normally around 24-26 degrees.
I keep an assortment of medicines and tonics in the 'fish cupboard' but none of my fish books really describe what my fish are suffering from, the closest I can get is a bacteria infection. Consequently and perhaps in desperation I removed the carbon filter from what has now become my hospital tank and have added Interpet No 9 Anti Bacteria medicine in the hope this alleviates their symptoms.
Can anyone advise if I should be doing anything else? Am I wrong to think it is bacterial?
