Hi, I have gold fish and was wondering: My fish are ALL acting wierd two died from major fin rot and that is starting on my others. IDK wats happening in my tank ive been through a lot of fish that just died. I have been going to the LPS every Sat. to get my water tested... just fine. Any help?

Oh and a replaced a seal before i set up the tank about 1 month and a half ago if that helps.

How big is your tank and exactly what fish do you have in there?

What are your readings when your water is tested? just fine doesn't give a true idea...

How long has the tank been set up?

Agree, you can't trust the LFS to test your water, you have to do it yourself with a liquid-reagent based test kit, and a decent one at that. Many here have learned all this the hard way. WD

I would also like to help but the potential of crowding is very real as is the potential, with a new tank like that, of having one or more biological poisons in the water. For our best chance of helping we will need a clear indication of
1. What fish you have and how many of each?
2. How big is the tank?
3. What is the ammonia concentration?
4. What is the nitrite concentration?
5. What is the pH of the water?
6. What are you feeding the fish?
7. How much water do you change and how often?

Thx, but right now I cant afford a test kit my LFS is selling them for $15! and yet they have a WE TEST YOUR WATER FOR FREE! sign right out front.

1. 2 comet and 2 fancy goldfish (small)
2. 30 gallons.
3. IDK but again LFS said its fine. (lady said a little high about .03)
4. ^ IDK
5. 7.0
6. Flakes (one small pinch once a day)
7. 25% every OTHER week

Thx!!!

It is time to start changing much more water. Goldfish are a fairly large load on a filter system and 4 of them in a 30 gallon is a heavy biological load. I would go to at least 30% water changes every week. A little high on ammonia is completely wrong. If you can measure any ammonia, it is way too high for an ongoing situation. The small pinch of goldfish flakes daily would be OK for a basic diet as long as you mix in a bit of fresh greens or even some frozen fish food once in a while to provide variety. When I want to add some greens, I use the discarded outer leaves from a brussel sprout that I have used for my own food. My veggie lovers go nuts for it. I just peel away a leaf from the sprout laying on my dinner plate and toss it into the tank. It never lasts very long in there.
Other green suggestions include blanched and slightly softened zucchini slices. Just weigh the slice down by piercing it with a fork. You can retrieve the fork from the tank after the zucchini is gone.
