Hi Everyone i am in the process of cycling the tank. I have been carrying out 20% water changes every 2 days and now my ammonia readings are 0. However this morning after a 20% water change my nitrite level read 5 so i did another 20% water change and now the reading's down to 1. Can anyone please tell me what i should do now? Another water change (bearing in mind i've changed 40% today!)?
Thanks everyone!! :/

How long have you been cycling your tank?

The ammonia bacteria develop faster that the nitrite bacteria so whilst your ammonia is under control your nitrite may still be peaking.

Hi James007
Just since last Saturday. I have 5 Zebra danios with which i'm cycling the tank and they seem really happy and playful.

You are still very very early into your tank cycling. At this stage don't worry about smallish ammonia readings and nitrite readings. Remember that your bacteria will not grow without the presence of ammonia and nitrite for them to feed on.

Your danios should prove to be quite hardy anyway so don't hamper your cycle too much by trying to eliminate all ammonia and nitrite by doing multiple water changes.

Don't add any more fish yet and you are still in your first week.
