:* I have 2 female mickey mouse platys and 2 male mickey mouse platys. The first question i would like answered is do i need more females??
The second problem is that 1 of my females is very fat and had babies a couple of months back but has stayed VERY fat, I have not seen her produce any more babies so i am worried. Also when i approach the tank she darts away and hides from me, which she never used to do. There is one healthy looking platy fry in our tank but there are no more platy fry. Do you think there is something wrong with her??
PLEASE HELP!! :shout:
BTW... My tank is 190 litres and in addition to my platies i have 4 guppies, 2 female, 2 male. 4 Harlequins.

My yellow female platy is permenantly bloated looking. She has had 3 batches of fry in 3 months. The first batch got eaten, the second batch gave me one surviving fry and the third batch are currently 6 weeks old and I rescued and am rearing 15 of them. She tends to exhibit odd behaviour depending on her 'time of the month' LOL. Sometimes she's swimming round looking very relaxed and happy and then she seems to go through a period when hides at the back of the tank behind a plant sitting on the bottom. It's after this stage that I notice the fry so I think she's just getting herself ready to have them.

At first I was really worried about her being so fat all the time and as a newbie I started looking up all sorts of illness that she could be showing symptoms of. However, she's just a greedy fish, eats load of food and has lots of babies. I'm happy that she's in good health now. Maybe it would help to make a kind of diary of her behaviour so that you can get some idea of whether there is some sort of monthly pattern forming?

hi,
yes you could do with some more females if you have the room, at least 2-3 for each male,
as you know they have fry roughly every 4 weeks, you may not always catch her having them as they may just become food, try not to over feed, i know its hard they always seem to beg, they like to eat peas and spinach and cucumber, just remember to soak these in boiled water for a short time first, and deshell the peas, if her scales are not sticking out from her body she shold be ok, keep an eye on her make sure shes swimming ok and her poo is not white and stringy. all the best donna :)
edit ive just read you have 2 male 2 female guppy also, so you could do with more females there to, nice size tank btw.
