Recently started a new fish tank with three danios, also bought five plants from pets@home

Has been a whole week... pH is ok.. Ammonia=0 Nitrite=0 Nitrate=0

120L tropical tank: 4cm Eco-Complete + 2cm gravel on the top ~25 degree C

From the first day, the plant is dying.. They dropped many leaves which seems to be 'transparent' (I dont really know how to describe actually. The leaf is becoming 'thin' losing the green then turning lighter green then dropping off). I found a lot of floating leaves in the tank.

I used ~8 hrs lighting every day.

What is wrong with those plants?

Is it because I did not give them fertilizer? Is Eco-Complete rich enough for them to live on?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Hello there, do you know what the names of the plants are? Also, if you could post pictures, that could also help.

I don't think your tank is cycled which means you need to keep a close eye on your water stats so that the fish don't suffer from ammonia build up. I apologise if you are already aware of this :)

A lot of new plants will "melt" when you bring them home. Just remove any dying leaves. As long as the stems/ crown is staying planted and strong then it should begin throwing out new leaves.

Plants are often grown out of water to reduce costs, the emersed leaves will die and submerged ones will grow.

Thank you for your reply. As I mentioned, I measure the water twice every day and all the stats are normal.

Leaf dropping did not stop for a whole week. That was why I was so worried.

With the Eco-Complete underneath, do I have to use liquid fertilizer for those plants?

Thank you.

I would use some, not all plants will take nutrients from their roots.

"as much"

if your worried about cost of fertilizer i would recommend dosing dry ferts. theres a pack which costs £18 that should last 6 months to a year depending on how much you dose. i have only been using a week and the improvement was quite amazing. theres lots of resource online about dry ferts and ei dosing and it can get quite confusing, i have now made a sheet that is simple to understand. if you would like me to point you to the site i brought it from then pm me. i also use eco complete aswell and to be honest i dont rate it that much!

i have now rescaped my tnak now that i know the dry ferts work! and im not spending £30 a month on ferts!

the problem with Eco complete is that it doesn't contain any macro nutrients, these are what plants miss out on most. As Damo says have a look at dry ferts or go for something like TNC complete or TPN+.
