What would be the point in leaving them open? To like fast them or something? They'd not like you and all do this

So you can make them get fed daily for about a week, then leave a compartment empty and have them wonder where the food is?

No. Lets say you want to feed them at 8:00AM and at 8:00PM. You would leave some compartments empty so food only falls out at those times.

Or you could fill all the compartments and make it turn every 12 hours.

Yes that too, it depends on your feeder though.
