i bought another new heater and i plugged it in straight away, i forgot to wait. Can the heater get damaged like this or go faulty?

It says on most heater packaging to leave the heater in the tank for 10 or so mins so it can read the tank temp, but i've never done this before and i havent had any problems so i wouldnt wory.

Well if it isnt in your tank yes  The most common way they get damaged is when people do a water change on their tank that drops the level below the height of their heater and leave it on. Contact with the air can cause them to shatter and its a real pain to clear up afterwards.

what i did was i put the heater in the tank with water lol, left it for 2 minutes and turned it on.

Hi,

On the box my heater came in it says to turn off the whole fish tank before putting your hands into the water to reduce the risk of an electric shock.
