When I visited the Fairoak branch, on the outskirts of Southampton, I discovered they are now selling plastic filter media containing balls at £1 for 3 balls (each about the size of a table tennis ball).

Adding say £5 worth of these might well jump start fishless cycling in a safe way and enable us new to the hobby start the fish stocking process off a little quicker!

The balls are floating at the top of a sparsely populated Malawi cichlid tank, so they ought to have some seeding ability, yes?

i would say they would give very little help

Agree with walkers101, unfortunately, gravel and other objects from "out in the tank" have been found to not really contribute usefully to "seeding" a new tank with the beneficial bacterial species we want. Despite the fact that we know some of them are bound to be on these objects, its just not enough to help in a significant way.

Now if they kept a large HOB on a crowded tank of plecos or something and handed out plastic baggies of some media from that after it had matured, they'd possibly be doing their beginners a great service!
