How thick should you let your HC get? I only ask as today I gave mine a major trim as it was about 1 & 1/2 inches thick and after the trim I could see some of the plant underneath going a bit brown. This resulted in some of the carpet coming away and having a gap underneath, it's now about 1/2 inch thick and I went round randomly poking my finger in it to push some of the roots back into the substrate. I'm hoping it will take, if not I'm not too worried as I can just cut it into squares and re plant but hopefully not.

i have seen is really thick, i have seen it 2 inches thick! I do prefer it when it's kept short though. Once settled you should be able to hack away at it. You will find yellow leaves underneath but it'll come back. Was having a discussion with my aquascaping mates (not gonna name drop!lol) and we were talking about Hc and we came to the conclusion that Hc isn't the best thing for a long term carpet in a tank. It's been said about 6-9 months max before the whole thing lifts.

Hmmm, I'll have to keep on top of this as I'm planning on leaving this set up for at least a year, I'll have to keep poking it back down.
