Hi all, I wonder if anyone can advise a newbie with a problem.

I have just finished a fishless cycle on a Juwel Rio 300 (first tank) and stocked it with 20 harlequin rasboras about 24hrs ago. All looked well until I got home from work today and noticed one had developed a white pectoral fin, the whole fin is white , not just spots. A few of the other fish's pectoral fins look like they are also going a bit white.
They are eating ok (just fed for first time) and look fine otherwise.

Ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrate 5-10 (same as tap water)
Ph 7.4 (shop Ph where bought was 7.6)
Kh 4d

Can anyone shed some light on why this is happening and suggest how to treat etc?

Thanks in advance
Stan

Do the fins look transparent and cloudy.
Any excess mucas on the fins.
Any white or red eding to the ends of the fins.
Any red streaking to the fins.
Do the fins look raggy and like there falling off in parts.

Hi, thanks for responding

This morning there is still only one fish with one white fin, it is a small fish of about 1 inch and the fin is tiny (2mm max).
It doesn't appear to have any mucus or redness and it doesn't look as if it is falling apart but it is so hard to see the fish as it is darting around a lot, the fin just looks white.

Any ideas? someone has suggested it might be an irritation after being netted in the fish shop?

On my previous deceased harlequin he had like white al over him, just presumed he had fungus so went out to get sum treatment, he died, now another of my harlequin has it, he is recovering.

White mucas on fish can be ph shock if they wasn't climatised right.

Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Darting not a good sign.
How long did you climatise them for.
What was the ph of the store to your tank.

Darting can mean bad water quality, toxins, stray voltage, overdose of med, ph shock, parasites.

Hi, I acclimatised them for about 20min in the bag unopened floating in the tank to equalise the temp then another 30mins adding a little water to the bag every 5mins then netted them into the tank. I took a sample of tank water to the shop and the owner compared it with his, 7.6 my tank, 7.4 for his tank but the pH meter was jumping around a bit so maybe not a reliable reading? (although I get about 7.6 for my tank)
Some of the harlequins now have some redness and don't look as colourful with some white colouration on some fins, I have just dosed with Waterlife Myaxin as advised by LFS, he suspects it may be pH related as well as the stress of moving.
No sign of flicking or rubbing.
Anything else I should be doing?

Juwel Rio 300, fishless cycle, fish went in Thursday p.m.
Ammonia/Nitrate 0ppm (have both been 0 since fish went in)
Nitrate between 10-20ppm (nearer10)
pH 7.6

These are our first fish, don't want to lose them..

Will Myaxin affect the bacteria in the filter media...

No myxazin should touch your beneifcal bacterial in your filter.
Where the redness as that can be septicemia.

i will be watching this thread with interest,

i have a shoal of 18 harlequins in my 125l tank and one of them has the same symptoms as you descibe. It has a white dorsal fin, but it swims with the shoal prefectly and feeds? I was worreid that maybe it was being fin nipped?> do you think it is an internal parasite? or infection?

Here a link to finrot.

Would need to look at your stocking.
Finrot is mainly caused by bad water quality.

Internal parasites signs are.
long stringy white poo, or clear mucas poo, or red poo.
Being thin or bloated.
Sunken in belly.
Enlarged anus or red inflamed anus.
Bent spine sometimes.
Worms prutruding from the anus.
Fish will sometimes swim on there sides with internal parasites.

stocking is fine, as is the water quality, i do regular weekly water changes and test water about bi-weekly....

it seems to happen when i first introduce the fish, maybe something to do with acclimitisation...?

do you reccomend any meds for it?> i will isolate him tonight i think..

thanks for the link, good read :good:
