can anybody give me some good starter corals that are both hardy, good for a beginner to the coral side of sw and colourful? maybe with pics if possible?

i will possibly have a triple 24w t5 light unit going through a condensation tray.

also what is the basic care for corals ie water additives, feeding etc.

thanks
sorry for amount of new threads i've posted in short space of time but i'd like my questions answered before i start thats all

Yep exactly the same as what ben said :) The only others I can think to add off the top of my head are:

Leather corals
Xenia
Green star polyps
Yellow polyps

With regards to additives etc. Dont use any (you will do more harm then good unless you are very, very careful and with soft corals in a standard setup you wont need any). Just use a good brand of salt and do regular water changes and your corals will be fine.

Most soft corals will not need feeding (just need good light and high qater quality). Make sure you do your research on any coral before you buy it as a lot of LFS stock corals that have very low chances of surviving in a home aquarium (and 9 times out of 10 they also do not identify them correctly).

ok thanks

should i still add phytoplankton and do they feed off that?

the corals listed only require good lighting and stable water conditions.

so no phytoplankton? what is that usually added for then?

Normally its added for non-photosynthetic corals (such as gorgonians and sun corals, though im not sure you would normally feed sun corals with phyto), some SPS and LPS corals and filter feeders (such as feather dusters). Some soft corals will feed but dont really need to. I occasionally feed some of my mushrooms, my zoas and my torch and bubble coral with chopped up mysis shrimp (and they usally snag some food when I feed the fish).

so if i was to have a red chilli coral then i would feed phytoplankton?

do copepods etc not feed on phyto?

Corals will grow fater if you dose phyto, but you need to turn your skimmer off for a couple of hours after dosing as it will take phyto out of the water collum.
