Haps, Peacocks, and Mbunas

Mbuna are rock dwellers - they live in and around rock reefs. They are smaller, have more herbivorous diets (for the most part) and prefer cover.

Peacocks are Aulonocara. Females live in groups in the open, like haps. Males nest within rocks, like mbuna.

Haps are generally open water predetors, ranging from micro-predators to piscavores.

Mixing between the three can be done, but carefully. Each species needs to be researched on its own if you want any sort of accuracy, because within each group lies further differences in needs. Books are written on the subject of lake Malawi fish and it's impossible to include everything in a post.
