From my research I have learnt that Jack Dempseys are very much a fish that can change colour with their mood. However I am trying to figure out if Rainbow is happy? he seems happy in the way he will move all over the tank, doesnt spend all his time hiding or anything like that and eats like a pig  , no other fish bother him (with the acception of Harry occasionally  ) but he is usually shadowed by his former bully Duce? No aggression between them at all, they just always seem to be together. When I arrived back from Matts with Rainbow he was very very pale (stress from the journey) and at Matts he was relatively lighter in colour than he is now. He always seems to be quite dark, which I am a little concerned about does dark mean happy if pale was stressed?. I have taken some pics, let me know what you think please :good:

Oh and please excuse the scratches on the tank,

It could just be you have a dark Jack. There are many variations of scale colour that have come about over the years due to attempts with enhancing the blue gene. Like matts latest EBJD i think will grow up very very different to mine going by Jeff Rapps previous breeding pairs.

If he's eating well and swimming about confidently i wouldnt be too worried. All the pictures i saw from Matt when he had him he was dark then too. So i'd say its his colouration. So long as your getting a good mix of staple pellet and frozen food he aught to be coloured nicely for his natural look :)

Is he the most dominant fish in the tank at all? Or is he lower down the order?

Well Harry thinks he is the boss  only because the Texas ignor his antics, Rainbow spends most of his time with Duce the second largest texas. The true boss of the tank is the red tailed black shark, she does not take any nonsence from anyone  So yes he is lower in the order.

He eats anything, cichlid pellet, tetra prima, spirulina sticks, bloodworm pellet, peas, broccoli, prawns, brineshrimp (frozen) cichliden (frozen) bloodworm (frozen) In fact there is nothing I have tried him with yet he has refused.

Thanks James :good:
