This is a discrace to the hobby.

Tetras "painted" orange and black for halloween. People treat fish like toys, making them whatever color they want. My parents wanted to get some, and I said if they do I am moving out of the house. lol

I just saw your pic, Lithril. That tactic would probably work better for you than for me. (you look like you could take a round out of the lfs owner lol)

I saw those Halloween tetras this year, too. What kills me is that the whiteskirt (albino blackskirt) tetras are SO beautiful before dying. They have a sort of opalescent sheen not seen in many other fish colours.

I told the dude at my lfs it was cruel, he said it wasn't up to him it was his boss. I say a harsh letter is in order :D

Its like someone putting a tattoo on you while your struggling to break free.

Isnt the dye they inject poisonus?

Since I am still a teenager my local fish store must have thought I was a ditz or knew nothing because they tried to tell me it was humane and they were fed colored food which changes the color of the fish. There stomachs would be red, not their spines!!!! What idiots. I had a few things to say about that and proceeded to name every fish in the tank (which were not even compatable temperments) and he was like in shock.... Ughhhhhh, I didn't even know that fish was called that..... hehe, I felt so smart :D

Perhaps the guy believed the story about the "colored food" himself, Auratus. Not everyone working in a pet shop is very bright!

(Besides, Frank Perdue tries to sell his disgusting yellow chickens by telling people it's because of the food they eat, not the hormones they give them! What's sad is that this has been going on so long now that people are forgetting what color natural chicken meat is. )

I'm glad that you let him know that you are knowledgable about fish. Perhaps these people need to be reminded, from time to time, that appearances can sometimes be deceiving when it comes to people.

didn't see any of those halloween fish here, but i did come across some albino tiger barbs that had been dyed red. they also had "painted glass fish". needless to say, i put down my fish food and left the store.

I wonder what people are thinking about when they buy these things. Do they plan to put them away in a box and bring them out again next year?

Doing this to living creatures is so disgusting that if I hadn't seen similar myself, I would find it hard to believe.

its a disgusting habit. I won't buy from stores that have "painted" fish. I always tell them how disgusting it is and walk right out the door. THEN I write a letter to the owners and tell them how disgusting a practice it is and how I will never buy from them again. Every holiday has animal abuse now it seems. I have seen baby chicks injected with ink sold for easter so that they come out colored in pastels and then die a few days later. I don't know why people would buy these tortured animals for their children!

That's terrible, I haven't seen them either but I bet if you go back in there in a month they'll have red & green tetras  ,nothing says "Merry Christmas" like a tortured fish
