How can I get Spitfire/sunshine to stop biting his tail? It's looking really ratty.

Are you sure its biting and not getting caught? A picture would be the best way of telling.

If he is indeed biting its usually down to boredom

eeee I live in fear of my guy starting this, but if it's often from boredom hopefully I'm safe because he keeps pretty busy at keeping his tank mates in line.

Tail biters need something to divert their attention. Have you tried placing him in a community tank? I have never experienced tail biting with my bettas but I have never kept one by himself either. It is just a hunch with me but it seems to me that a bored betta may be the one who starts chasing and biting his own tail. If he has other fish to take his attention, it may well give him something better to do than tail biting.

He is WAY to aggressive to be in a community tank (killed a platy). I put a plastic slinky in the tank and he is having fun with it.

Sorry platy lover. I have never had a nice betta who could not be kept with other fish. Maybe we have gone too far in breeding for aggressiveness?

I think we have, it is really sad.
