I went to my lfs today looking for some fish to go in my 176 litre upgrade tank, along with the stock in my sig.. .the woman I spoke to about the green terrors and blue mooriis said that I deffo couldn't keep these with other fish, yet I've just read on a site that cichlids are mostly community fish even tho they are territorial. I thought I'd double check with you guys as this is the same woman who told me that I couldn't keep my betta with my neon tetras as he would eat them, so I bought a betta from another man in the shop, and the betta didn't touvh them, a week later the same woman sold me an angel fish to go with my tetras, who ate the lot! so I dont really trust her lol

No their not community fish, think of the name green terror... what do u think a terror is :)

Blue dolphins are a African cichlids and will not go with a new world cichlid.

Ah yeah.. didn't think of it that way! will the terrors mix with other american cichlids? I've got a new tank on the way and just trying to decide which stock route to go down now!

if u get them small and rear then with other fish they may be ok, but they like to sit in their corner, dig up the gravel, and bully anything that comes near them........

But then their not my cup of tea.

How big is the new tank? GT's require quite abit of room.
I'd also point out (if you don't know) that a CA cichlid 'community' isn't like a regular community tank, where stock levels limit the number of fish. Its aggression with most of the CA cichlids that limit stocking, and even then you can get a rogue fish that doesn't like other occupants.

Hope you go down the CA route, they're my favourite group of fish :p

I've just upgraded to a 181 litre tank, and also have a 106 litre tank which I'm about to start a fishless cycle in soon. So depending on which route I decide to go down I may have to switch my 'communnity' tank over to the smaller one, as I've read cichlids can get very big!? Either way i expect to upgrade both tanks yet again at some point anyway! Cichlids are deffo looking like the way forward tho, I've seen so many beautiful cichlids!
If I do decide on a cichlid tank, would I be right in thinking id have to stick to all cychlids from the same area if you get what i mean... all CA, all SA or all african... or are some of them ok to mix with others? I want to find all this out before i start buying fish, as i dont want to be stuck with one particular fish that wont mix with all the other fish I'd like!

Generally its best to not mix around old (african) and new world (american) cichlids due to water chemistry and temperament differences. Though it has been done, I wouldn't really recommend it.

Sizes vary of NW cichlids considerably from the small 3" (eg. rams and apistos) to the downright huge 12"plus cichlids (eg. red devils, veija's, jags and dovii) so really theres cichlids for every tank size.

For 181 litres I wouldn't get a GT, as I think they will be too big for the tank, a similar option would be a blue acara, these are more peaceful and grow smaller.

What maybe good is if you tell us the fish you like, then other people can say what goes with what or what would fit into your tank.

Right... so I suppose first I should petty much decide between old or new world cichlids! At the moment I dont even know which fish are cichlids apart from the ones mentioned on this thread, so I have a bit of researching to do before I start to pick out fish I like! Once I've done that I'll get back to this thread for some compatibility help!

New World is the way forward.

I have some GT's in my tank. May give you some ideas.

I have two green terrors I bought a 75 gallon hoping to put then in there with my oscar. The first time I tried this was in my 55 the green terror was bigger then the oscar but got picked on. So had to separate. When I tried it again green terror still bigger but this time the green terror went after the other green terror much smaller and the oscar. Had to take him out then the smaller green terror went after the ocar. Needless to say I now have a total of 11 fish and 5 tanks. :good:

I thank my friend for this the oscar and green terrors were his until he decided to get out of the hobby and I told him Id take them cause no pet store would.

Thats a great tank Oscar! I'm still deciding between old and NW tho. A few of the malawi cichlids took my fancy..

But most the ones I like seem to be NW cichlids, as far as I can tell anyway - Blue Acara, firemouth, salvini, rams, discus, rainbow. I've been completely put off GT now! Altho they look beautiful, it sounds like I'd end up with a tank of just GT! lol
