I bought gravel that was relatively cheap from Walmart (maybe about a year ago) and I just recently bought two guppies (Friday.) When I use the net and try to catch my fish for a water change, they gravel flakes off in to tiny specs that float around my tank (tank is 1 gallon.) I'm worried because one of my guppies is acting strangely. One half of the time, she floats around the top, and stays in a corner. The other, she's at the bottom, and still in a corner. Should I change to a different gravel that doesn't flake off?

your gravel doesn't sound good, ive never heard of gravel flaking before, is it painted gravel? if so i would get rid of it there horrible looking and dont do good for your water stats

No, I don't think it's painted. I think it's just cheap. My fish is now swimming against the wall of the tank, going up and down. What does that mean?

Get the gravel out of the tank.
Water changes, fresh black carbon, fresh filter floss.

Check water stats.

the tank is too small for the fish you have in it hun
has the tank got a filter - if not you need to be doing water changes at least 5 times a week to stop ammonia etc building up and damaging your fish

definately REMOVE the gravel as soon as possible

Thank you all so much! I did change the gravel and my fish are much happier! Sad to say, no I do not have a filter. I am hoping to upgrade to a new tank soon (10G at least) so my fish will have more space. I don't have anything else I can do for them at this point besides change their water. I do change it frequently, so there are no worries. They do stare at me when they want food...I guess that is a plus.

1 gallon?!?!

If your not getting a 10 gallon soon, return the fish to the store. they probaly are very stressed and sad.

oldish thread..hopefully theyve got it sorted by now.
cheers
