I have a question...Do bettas and gouramis get along in one tank?

Also, how many male gouramis can I keep together in a 50 gallon community tank? Can't find any females. But the LFS were keeping the boys all together cramped in a tank, and they seemed to get along fine...
Bettas and gouramis do not get along, and they will often fight each other.

The reason the gouramis in the lfs are ok is because there are too many there. By overstocking them, they pretty much don't have any space so swim, much less to fight.

What gouramis do you want?

P.T.

Kittycat: I assume your talking Dwarf Gourami (since you mentioned you can't find any females). In a 50 gallon tank i'd keep 2 - 3 provided you have enough plants, decorations etc to allow them to form territories. You don't want them to be fighting all the time

However, just a waring, many Dwarf Gourami now carry nasty disieses such as TB due to inter-breeding. Although not all fish are infected a majority of those sold are which has led to many Lfs refusing to stock them. Personally, i'd try to stay away from these fish due to the problem i described above but if you do purchase some be on the constant lookout for any disiese. To reduce the chances of an outbreak keep water condition good (regular water changes, no extremes of Ph or hardness) and feed a varied diet

Good luck with your tank :)

Well this all I can write this took me 3 hours to do, So please use it. if mods or admins see this please PIN this topic. It might be helpful to newbies. I wrote all this words, but those pics are not mine. Thank You From ur Gourami Lover 8)

I would like to thank all y sources from the pics, And I got my info from a fish handbook.

Sorry, I meant dwarf gouramis. I'm planning to make my 50 gal a sort of community tank. I put a betta in there temporarily, though, until I can get him a smaller home. The gouramis are presently in a 10 gal for quarantine, so I think I'll have enough time to put the betta elsewhere by the time they move to the community.

What are the symptoms of TB? Is this contagious? I have heard that the dwarfs are more susceptible to disease and such, but it's the only kind I've seen around, so I took the chance. I'm not sure if the D.Gouramis in my region are in the same situation, I'm located in Asia--but then, that's where most LFS over there import from, right?

Joker, lovely pics. :) What do you call the color of the third dwarf you posted (orange body)?

I'd just like to say that the opaline gourami and gold gourami are color morphs of the blue gourami, I don't know why the opalne has a different size put down :p

I love my cobalt gourami, The irredecent vertical red and blue striped are breathtaking.

A lot of people seem to think that just because a fish is not called a 'gourami' it doesn't belong in the same group. Having said that, paradisefish (macropodus opercularis) also circulate under the common name of 'paradise gourami'.

Anyway, by deffinition, a 'gourami' is a fish from the family 'osphronemidae' or sometimes 'belontidae' (depending on how up-to-date your sources are :p). The family is devided into a few subfamilies and these further devided into several genera. These not only include the common 'trichogaster', 'colisa' and 'trichopsis' genera from which we get three-spots, pearls, dwarf, honey and croaking gouramies, it also includes fish often not considered gouramies such as those belonging to the genera 'betta', 'macropodus' and 'ctenops' which includes the paradisefish as well as the various betta species including b. splendens and, the aptly named frail gourami ctenops nobilis.

Another related family of fish are the 'anabantidae' which include the ctenopoma and anabas genera. A lot of the fish found in the 'gourami' family were once classed in this family. These are not gouramies but very similar in many ways.

So to answer your question, paradisefish have always been gouramies. It's the common name (which is entirely irrelevant) that confuses matters. They could be called blueberry pies and they'd still be gouramies. :p

edit: because not all the species names were in italics ;)

Banded Gourami

Colisa_fasciata0.jpg

I just purchased a tattoed gourami (that's what they told me it was). Does anyone have any information on them or a picture. I took one here at home of it. I will post it later.

It would be better to post that in the main section rather than in this thread. I'll google 'tattooed' gourami and see if it turns up a scientific name meanwhile. But a picture would be best.
