Deanasue has always recommended to me 20g for one fancy and then additional 10g for every fancy after.

That’s correct for fancy goldfish. Single tail goldfish need 100G just for one fish and should be put in a pond. . Great job, @NCaquatics!

50G = 4 goldfish
I would only go 3, though. I have 2 in a 75G because one is about 8” now.

I was going to get hillstream loaches for the half.

Hillstream loaches need a strong water flow. I have no idea whether that's OK for fancy goldies or whether they need slow moving water, but something to think about before getting the loaches.

I’m afraid Hillsream Loaches are a big no-no with goldies. They need 2 different environments. Goldfish have high hemoglobin and can easily take in oxygen where the hillsyream loaches gave very low hemoglobins and have difficulty taking in oxygen in low conditions. The goldies would not leave enough oxygen for the loaches. Mountain minnows and danios are about the best choices with goldies.

3 fancy goldfish would be ideal, in any breed you like. They will live happily and can grow to their potential size in there. Adding more fish will lead to more frequent water change as the nitrate level will spike quickly, unless you have good size sump filter with lots of plants.

Now I have a question that needs to be as unbiased as possible, but for this size tank do you guys think I should keep goldfish or keep some tropical schooling fish in a planted tank

With your tank size you can choose which one you prefer. Each has its own way of handling.
