I'm wanting to move my Ryukin goldfish (Bambi) out of my community tank, but I've grown pretty attached to the little bugger and I want to make sure she continues to be healthy and happy. Is a goldfish bowl really a humane way to keep a fish?

no way buy a 30 gallon for a gold fish with a big external canister filter, make sure its longer as opposed to wide

no not really, not unless you have a filter on it. even then goldfish grow quite large so you would need a very large bowl. if you dont have a filter then it will continue to swim in its own waste... yea fish bowl no good IMO.

NO i'm sorry hun it would not be a humane way to keep the goldfish

it is recommended goldfish have at least 20 gallons each and seeing as they can live for over 15 years if they are kept in a small tank there growth can be stunted and that causes organ failure

So sorry not to have better news hun

In short the answer is No,

a Ryukin is easily abe to reach sizes of upto 8 inches and like all goldfish is a messy fish,
In reality a fancy tailed goldfish should be housed in a tank no smaller than 20G

Thank you for the quick response, my problem is I'm a college student and don't have money lying around to buy a new tank set up. I was having bad luck with keeping fish alive for awhile so buying the goldfish was like a last attempt before i gave up. Probably wasn't the best idea but now I have this growing Ryukin and nowhere to put him

try advertising locally to see if someone has a large tank or a pond to keep him in , i know it's difficult to part with them but it's the best enviroment for it

Hey hey Hey! you are not allowed to swear on these forums......Goldfish bowl (I say  )

Get a big clear plastic storage tub ( I seem to be having to remind people of these just lately !!!!! ) . The very biggest you can get your hands on. And use that as a temporary tank until you can re-home the fish. A Fluval 3 or 4 internal cannister filter will do for now, and you'll need to do 50% water changes every week at the very least to keep him healthy.

You can add bunches of fake plants , rocks and decor for him as you would in a proper tank. But since it would be temporary until re-homing, don't bother with gravel. It's easier to keep clean with a bare base too.

When he's been re-homed you can simply empty the tub, put the spare filter to run in your community tank to keep it cycled, and keep the empty tub and it's decor in storage for a quarantine or hospital tank. :good:
