Hi there!

I have recently taken up keeping tropical fish as a hobby, and I'm hooked. I want to move on to a nicer tank than the one I have now, and I would like your advice on how best to set up a Fluval Edge... I'll show you the things I plan on getting for the tank below.

This isn't my tank, but it will look similar!

Mine is the first or second one, about 50 watt

Pura Filtration Pad, I was advised this is better than stock filter media...

New Lights

I have purchased 2 of these, tech specs:

Socket: MR11
Lumen: 150
Cluster: 12X 5050 SMD LED
Voltage: 12V
Wattage: 2.5W
Colour: Day White (6000K-6500K)
Beam Angle: 120 Degree

I have decided on black gravel at the bottom of the tank and artificial plants as they make no waste, and don't detiorate, and I have a selection of ornaments.

Is there anythings else I need to set up this tank?

Thanks!

Benji.

You dont mention a filter, does it come with a built in one?

I love the look of those tanks, seems they may be a bit tricky to keep clean though, so maybe a magnetic algea remover?

Hi Benji,

Have you decided on which fish you want to stock in the tank? I have heard other users say that the Edge design, while looking really cool, is also somewhat limited in stock options. Such as no fish that need to breathe at the surface, like Guoramis and Bettas.

I haven't yet decided what fish to put in the tank, I am going to cycle the tank for a few weeks, that'll give me some time to decide... Do you have any advice on fish to keep on this tank?

I'm not experienced enough to suggest stocking an Edge. But you should get some suggestions from other forum members. I really like how that tank looks, so I hope it goes well for you!

Looks pretty :)

These tanks are quite small am I right in saying 23 litres? So how about a species tank with 3 or so Dario dario? (CHECK whether this is not overstocking (or what I really mean is, whether the fish are okay with that much space between them as I think they can be quite territorial) first though, as I'm not experienced).

Or alternatively a species tank with 2 or 3 dwarf puffers?

Make sure in either case the tank is well planted though. And also they can both be fairly picky when it comes to food.

Or a shrimp tank might be nice!

Have fun!!!

Have a look at our fishless cycling working article by rdd1952 in the Beginners Resource Center if you haven't already. It gives a good baseline that the members can take and help you with if you keep a fishless cycling log thread here in our subforum. Its a great way to be cycling the fitler while discussing other beginner topics. WD

WAAAYYYY too many fish for that tank. Drop the swords for certain. Corys are tough as they need a bit of surface oxygen. Are you absolutely set on this Edge? While it looks cool it is actually very impractical for fishkeeping, too little surface area, too little filtration. Have you looked at some of the rimless cubes out there? Would be much more practical.

Just wanted to add that you should try to search this forum for "fluval edge", lots has been written about the challenge of this tank.

Karins right there certainly has been lots written about on here about the Fluval Edge tank; good and bad and I can speak from (v limited) experience as a Fluval Edge owner. The tank is certainly very aesthetically pleasing with its neat, contemporary styling and the compact design which houses the internal filter.

The opening is small and limits the size of decoration that you can fit through the gap but it is more than easy enough to get your hand (one hand) in and work. Initially we found the tank quite noisy so we removed the clear plastic lid that sits on top of the filter and that made a big improvement. With the water level right up the tank is very near silent in operation.

The size of the opening is often cited as being restrictive for fish that breath at the surface but you can always drop the water level but be prepared for some extra noise of the water pouring from the filter outlet into the tank.

The fluval edge heater was pretty useless TBH. We replaced ours with a different 50W heater with adjustable thermostat. I never liked the idea of not being able to manually set the desired temperature.

As for stocking I am not experienced enough to offer any suggestions. There was a topic a while ago about stocking ideas for the edge that would be worth a look Choosing fish for a fluval edge

I havent changed the lighting in mine. There are clips on Youtube with people doing all sorts of mods such as LEDs etc. The only other thing I have done is add a spirit thermometer and the fluval pre-filter sponge which will stop things e.g. fish and shrimp getting sucked up into the filter. Also we got a small gravel cleaner and it is easy to work and great for getting a siphon going for emptying and re-filling the tank:- Mini gravel cleaner

Also dont bother with little bottles of cycle that come supplied in the box. Instead I dechlorinate the water I am putting into the tank tetra aquasafe and did a fishless cycle.

All in all we are pleased with it.

fattail95 - It has been suggested to me in another thread to stick to a 25W heater as the edge is a 23 litre tank and with a 50W heater if it stuck on could cook the fish!

I too just got the fluval edge. Had a major issue with supplied AquaClear power filter. The U-intake tube had a hole causing air to get into system and not pumping. Since I was already setup with water, gravel, and Laterite, I had a brand new Marineland C-160 canister filter to install :) . What a pain to fit hoses in case, but help with a key hole saw and all is well. Now my water is clear within a day and going through cycle.

I decided on using brown rocks with a under-bed of Laterite because I will be keeping a planted tank in the future with minimal fish. Maybe 6-8 Neon Tetras and 1-2 shrimp.

Can someone suggest a good plant friendly shrimp?

And maybe some good plants to start out with in a few weeks?

I do plan on replacing the stock lights with LED's and since I have room now since the aquarclear is gone an small plant light to provide a full light source. I can tell now with just the stock lighting the lights shine almost straight down with dark areas on the sides of the tank.

Thanks all

Rob
PS> Had a few tanks up to a 55 gal way back. The fluval is great for desk space constraints and the spouse that does not want a big tank in the house.

My local lfs has one set up on the counter. They have 3 Harlyquin rasboras in it. They look very nice. How about trying that?
