Just added what I was told are a young (2.5" to 3") male/female pair of Geophagus Altifrons to my tank and am hoping that someone can confirm whether or not they are in fact Altifrons? I'm no expert on these fish, but have looked for images on the web and the thing that makes me question their identity is that both of the pair have some vertical banding on their bodies that I've not seen in any Altifrons pictures I've come across.

Hi Im no geo expert but there are some on here so I am sure you will get an answer soon.  Can I ask where you got them from and how much they cost ?  Cheers.

Living Waters in Croydon - a truly excellent outfit and where most of my recent stock has come from. Think they were about £40 each....more than I'm used to paying but I understand that this variety are relatively hard to come by....well I've never seen them before in my LFS's. Since my original post I've checked out the Google image results for Altifrons and have now seen some that seem to have this same faint banding, so I guess they probably are Altifrons.

They just look stressed. If the banding doesn't disappear when they've settled then I'm not sure but they just look like stressed Altifrons to me. Not an expert but my partner knows about them and he says they look stressed so I'm inclined to listen to him.

Hi and thanks for the feedback. That photo was taken pretty soon after they went into the tank, so hopefully they are no longer stressed. It's quite peaceful in their tank and the water quality is good, so hopefully they will do well.
