Well, i was planning to have more than 1 gorumaie in my tank. I have 6 tertas 2 black skirt and 4 lemon tetra in my 30 gal.. I also have 1 guppy (not red). I am hopefully going to get bolivian rams 1 male 1 female. Planning to get 2 more black skirt tetras, and 3-4 guppies. I am definately getting gorumaies. Prefarbely honey gouramies. Now the thing is what shud i get in gender? 1 male 1 female. Will that work? OR 1 male 2 females? Or 1 female 2 males? Which combination works? Any suggestions will be very helpful. I am going to the lfs tommorow (bout 18 hours from now) so if i cud get advise in the next 18 hours it wud be awesome.

-Thx

I'd suggest getting 2 females to a male as ive found that some male goramis' can tend to be a bit agressive toward just 1 female where as with 2 they get distracted (same as Betta's) and this also decreases the likely hood of injury to the female.
As for the Bolivian Rams, being from the Chiclid family tend to be very territorial and may cause harm to the other fish you have in your tank. For Example: if you have a community tank that you should keep your livebearers and bubble nest builders together and your Cichlids are better in a tank with other cichlids than with live bearers and your bubble nest builders.

So have a think about it I know other people will have a different opinion to me but those are my thoughts on your situation now its up to you to decide.

K sounds good 1 male 2 females. Thx for the help.

Make sure you go for honey gouramies (colisa chuna/sota) as they are more peaceful than some of the other gouramies you may find at your LFS. 1 male, 2 females is fine.

The bolivian rams, if they breed, will be a problem for any guppies you have. Consider getting german blue/gold rams instead. they are more peaceful (but also more fragile).

Bec1984 - you mentioned bettas being kept as trios. Just so you know, unless you are reffering to a species other than betta splendens, bettas should not be kept in mixed-sex groups.

Advise taken. Thx
I might switch to german rams. I have never had ram before therfore i would like to get the sturdiest ram. And bolivian rams are more sturdy. As far as breeding goes, i doubt they will breed because it is my first time with these fish. Not only that but being my first time with rams i probaly wont get the "perfect temp/ph/ water softness. They probaly wont breed then. And finally even if they do i am getting a new tank in mid jan so i can always transfer the rams
:D

Going to lfs tommorow and going to try to find good honey gourmaies.

What you are saying about breeding them would be true for the german rams but bolivians are very adaptable and it's almost impossible to stop them from breeding. Just be very careful basicaly. Actualy, bolivians can also be kept alone - so if you want a ram but don't want to breed yet, you could always get just one (females are friendlier) and you can add another once you buy the new tank.

I was referring to betta splendens (aka the siamese fighting fish) i have 1 male to 3 females in my 5 ft tank and i have had no problems with them attacking each other or the other fish ie Guppies and sword tails.
I wouldnt keep cichlids in with these fish as they are more territorial than these breeds of fish and will more likely end up with the deaths of the other fish.

That's interesting - how long have you had them together? I've heard of people trying this but something always goes wrong at one point or another. Not a risk I would take.

Not all cichlids are aggressive. Like I said before, a breeding pair of bolivians won't be welcomed by your guppies - and that's why getting a single one would be better. German rams are more peaceful but a lot more fragile. They also have to be kept in pairs but, if they breed, will cause less trouble considering the tank is deffinately large enough for them.

I would imagine the sheer size of the tank makes the real difference with the bettas. After all a 5ft tank allows plenty of distance between the male and the females if they want it. Do they breed? I suspect those in the betta section would be fascinated with your setup. :)
I'd never keep them in with Gouramies tho. :X
hugs,
P.
