Wondering if anyone had any German Blue Ram tank mate ideas. Obviously the water temp would be higher and water more acidic and softer... I was hoping there would be some sort of pencil fish that would work as im bored of neon tetras...

Tank is a 20 gallon tall, and there would be one pair of GBR, as about 5-6 pygmy corys..

GBR's tend to not be aggressive to much smaller fish like Black Neon Tetras, so I suggest getting something like that. Also, GBR's can be kept in water that varies from 26 - 29 degrees C as this reflects their natural habitat in Venezuela. GBR's can also do well in neutral to slightly alkaline and hard water.

Increasing the temperature and achieving acidic/soft water just encourages breeding. To not have these conditions wouldn't kill them but would discourage breeding.

Thanks for the reply! Yes i know they can be kept in less acidic and not as soft conditions but id like to do whats best for the fish.

Anyways, for tank mates I was thinking pencil fish because they are more so exotic when it comes to small schooling fish...... I really don't like neons (black or blue), cardinals etc....there just really boring to me and everyone has them which makes them not as unique...

It depends how reliable fishbase is as a source. According the them, of the pencilfish I've actually seen in the shops, beckfordi and maginatus don't like it above 26 deg, whereas eques and trilineatus can go up to 28 deg. Maybe do some more research on those last two, and see what everyone else recommends for their upper limit. Maybe unifsciatus as well if you could find them.

But like I said, check them all out with other sources first.

Hmmm I see.... well I actually went to my LFS today and saw that they actually have some pencil fish species in (of which im not sure which species) and after seeing them in person there not especially what I thought they were. So I think im going to stick with a group of some sort of small tetra (as I contemplate it more, i think ill just get some cardinals...) But if you have any other smaller tetra ideas let me know! (ps its a highlight planted so any somewhat translucent fish will probably not look as swell)
