When I'm reading through the boards I've just realised that there is UK Gallons and US gallons. Why? What version do you use when talking about your tank? There is a big difference between the two so perhaps we should only use the UK measurement :p I'm sure all the US/Canadians wouldn't mind, it would make my life easier :D

I'd rather like to read us gallon measurements. I don't even know a single thing about uk gallon measurements or how much the difference is. Or everyone can just use litres, but I'm slow at maths and it'll take me a while to change litres into us gallons. :D

Try this: http://www.joshmadison.com/software/convert/

I have that installed and on my desktop and use it all the time!! Not just for gallons etc but also for tempature and other stuff.

:D

I think it would just be best when everyone is talking about gallons to always put a

UK gallons or
US gallons

in front of the number so we know which gallons it is. I also just learned that there is a different between UK and US gallons. I don't understand why either.......hmm

Whenever I post I usually post in litres but also give the amount in US gallons too. :D

U.K. gallons are an Imperial mesurement
Whereas U.S. gallons are a Metric mesurement

1 Imperial gallon (U.K.) = 1.2 U.S. gallons or 4.54ltr
ergo 1 U.S. gallon = 3.785 ltr or .832 Imperial gallons

Continental Europe and Australasia use Litres

When posting I tend to use U.S. gallons

HTH :D

1 Imperial gallon (U.K.) = 2.2 U.S. gallons

Erm ... doesn't 1 imperial gallon = 1.201 US gallons?
Yeah

1 UK = 1.20095 US

The difference is not massive but it's important to understand it especially when it comes to medicine etc. For instance my 320l tank is 71UK gallons or 84US gallons and 13 gallons is quite a difference in terms of meds but it would not be quite so big in smaller tank (although of course the over/under medicating would be the same in percentages).

ok ok its a typo :*)

Edit Was

The standard unit used on this forum is the US gallon unless otherwise stated, it has always been that way and will continue to be so as it causes the least complication.

Is that true of meds and stuff that are made in the UK? I have always assumed if it was made in the UK that they would use imperial gallons.

:(

No, thats just the unit used on THIS FORUM for advise on stocking limits, giving tank sizes etc, for medications and treatments please reffer to the manufacturers instructions on the bottle/box.

Gotta agree. Not only is it difficult to work out US / UK gallons & litres but all the flipping additives and meds give their dosage in different measures :

Melafix : 5ml - 10US gal / 40lt
Interpet swimbladder treatment : 5ml - 20Gal (doesn't say UK or US) / 100lt
Easy Balance : 2.5ml - 10lt / 2.2 Gal (doesn't say UK or US)

What a NIGHTMARE! :S

Why can't they give a graduated measuring cup or spoon with the instructions for 1 litre, 1 us gal AND 1 UK gallon. Then it would be easy for everyone - no matter what size of tank or measurements you prefer.
