The water in my area is high hardness and the ph is 7.4-7.6 looking for ideas of what fish would be best in this environment

Can you give us the actual GH number?

Look on your water provider's website - they may have your hardness listed. You need a number rather than words.

I used one of those test strips and the color was dark blue I will test it with a real kit and get a number

Before you waste money for a test kit you will likely only use the once...can you see if the water authority has this info? I see you are in Long Island, and I believe New York City has quite soft water.

Hardness is not measured in ml. Can you tell us exactly what it says, or even better post a screenshot after editing it to remove anything which says where you live.

This is the report I was given

Now we're getting there. Th total hardness which is GH is given as 2.3 mg/l. Mg/l is equal to ppm, one of the units we use in the hobby. The other unit is degrees, and 2.3 ppm is the same as 0.12 dGH. This is very soft water (comparable to what I have). You can see why we always ask for the actual numbers...this is not "high hardness."

Now we know this, we can suggest suitable fish. And you have lots to choose from. All the characins (tetras, pencilfish, hatchetfish) and catfish and dwarf cichlids from South America, all the cyprinids (rasboras, danios, barbs, loaches) and gourami from SE Asia, and some of the smaller rainbowfishes. [Avoid all livebearers, this water is too soft for them.] The size of the aquarium (dimensions as well as volume) will determine which of these are possible.
