The first time ever my Rotkeils have raised fry all on their own to free swimming around the tank, normally they get eaten as soon as they hatch, but Uncle Chops has taken up some of the duties of keeping the other fish away (just great  )

Some not great pics of the parents with their fry.

Congrats, nice Christmas present for you off your fish

hmmmm knowing "uncle" chops hes thinking with his stomach and keeping he others away from his future lunch ( or so he thinks)

Now that would be smart thinking waiting for them to grow into a decent meal

well they do say oscars are 1 of the most inteligent fish , and they are deffinately ruled by their stomachs  on a side not tho i love the way the sevs really darken up like that when they spawn . they look fantastic

They are almost black at the moment apart from the yellow belly and the edges of the fins have turned deep orange. James when he came to collect the babies didnt recognise them as Rotkeils they are that dark. Pre spawn when they are flirting is the best colouration, the females face goes deep blue, its gorgous.

yep certain cichlids in full breeding dress are just stunning ,

Indeed i didnt recognise them as rotkeils when i arrived. Colouration is just magnificent, they certainly are spectacular specimens. I have no worries about how stunning the 3 i walked away with will grow into. I'm dumbfounded by how little interest she has had of late from the remaining 20+ or so fry she has left over from the last spawn.

:good: Good luck with the remaining rotties for sale Lesley, and whatever you decide to do with this latest spawn haha. Mother nature perhaps?

COngrats.

The spawning colours of those parents are certainly spectacular. WOuld love to see a photo of the female pre-spawn (as you described) if you ever get the chance !

I took this pic of them courting

The parents had well hidden the fry in the night, they are swarming around the front of the tank again now, so much for the clown loach snacking on them, Chops wont let them anywhere near the fry.
