ive never had a betta before, i want to make sure before i get it that i have the right food, i have read that they can have freeze dried bloodworms and freeze dried brine shrimp?

what else can they have?

also Hikari bio gold betta pellets? will it like them?  Tetra do a betta flake food but i dont know it will like it?

Hikari betta pellets are good, I would also suggest New life Spectrum betta pellets and Atison's betta Pro pellets. Those are the top three most high quality pellets on the market and the ones I'm currently using aswell. Always soak your pellets prior to feeding.
Avoid anything freeze dried as they are void of any nutrients and lack moisture which will damage your betta's liver over time. Buy frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms instead, or even better live bloodworms and brine shrimp. Defrost all frozen foods thoroughly first before feeding, aswell.
When picking out your betta's diet and feeding regiment, pellets should be their main and stable diet. Feed frozen or live only once or twice a week. You may alternate between the live and frozen each week so your betta doesn't get bored of their food. Live brine shrimp is one of the best sources of food for your betta, high in protein and gets your betta to exercise. You can also buy brine shrimp eggs and get a DIY shrimp hatchery going which is easy and gives you a endless supply of food.

hikari bio gold is what i use, he loves them, they are tiny pellets so easy to feed

I use omega one pellets. That's what the store fed them. My betta gets frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp twice a week. I had another brand (Tetra, I think) that he couldn't fit in his mouth.

My bettas get Aquarian tropical fish flake, Tetra Fresh Delicia bloodworms , crushed algae pellets, good for digestion. I also give my male betta small insects I find flying in the house, he has to be quick else the wc mountain minnows get them first, these are just a treat, bettas love them.

gone on a spending spree on ebay! bought 2 packs of hikari bio gold and a pot of tetra betta flakes, also a nice silk plant :) going to go to my aquatics shop nearer the time and get some frozen food :)

would you say the tetra fresh delicia bloodworms are as good as frozen? might just be easier? do you feed the whole sachet or a bit at a time?

I only give my male about 1/4 of a sachet, bearing in mind the minnows get a fair bit, the girls get the rest. I only feed this once a week just before I do a water change, so there is none left over in the tank. For conditioning for breeding I used this twice a week I found it much easier and convienient than frozen. Good luck with your betta, are you keeping it with anything else?

Live White Mosquito Larvae is my Bettas favourite food (they do get other live foods as well such as Brine Shrimp).
Frozen Brine Shrimp in Garlic is good, plus you can soak their pellets in the liquid too.

Their main diet is Hikari Bio-Gold Pellets, with the live food as a treat about once a week rotated with the frozen (thawed first of course).

Mine also love a bit of chopped up prawn and go mad for a muscle opened up so they can get to the middle.  I keep them frozen and get one out now and again for them (thawed first of course).  The main thing with these is you must remove them after they have had a good go at them before they decompose in the aquarium.  I usually feed them before lights out and take them out the next morning.  The Kuhli/Java Loaches and Corys love these too.

Slightly off topic but also get an Indian Almond Leaf to put in with him and let it slowly decompose over time.  These are good for conditioning the ideal water for them.  I have now started to get mine on-line in bulk as they were too expensive individually locally.  With only one Betta though you maybe able to get them locally as required.

Welcome to the addictive world of the Betta.  Do you have a picture of your Betta?

I'm kind of surprised that everyone is saying to only feed frozen foods once or twice a week, daily or every other day is fine! Before pellets bettas were fed nothing but live foods. :p

I recommend rotating between high quality pellets (Attisons Betta Pro, Omega One Betta Buffet pellets, New Life Spectrum Betta Pellets, etc.), frozen foods like Bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, tubifex worms, and if they're small enough daphnia, and if possible live foods like wingless fruit flies.
