Never dealt with floating plants before so need some suggestions.

African species would be preferable

But more important would be a hard plant it's going to be in an I closed aquarium (closed lid ) 2x t5 bulbs a few inches above.

I'm looking to add an african butterfly fish and want to give him some good cover to fill safe.

ive got silvania natans in my tank under the same conditions as you describe with the same lighting. its pretty fast growing though and I need to cull it monthly. not sure if its African.

Yeah that's the sort of thing I'm looking for. The lights don't burn it or nothing

it can do If you let it carpet your tank. new growth tends to push the old on top of it and when it drys out it goes brown. might take a few trials and water changes before you work out the best level. but I have my tank filled to the brim with only about 2" gap from the lights. I find its mostly the old stuff that goes brown. I just take a few hand fulls out every water change so the carpet doesn't get too thick.
