can anyone tell me any names of plants that float on the surface of the water, ones that are easy to look after.

Water lettuce. Sorry I can't give you the latin name, all I know is it's very easy to grow and each plant gets to be about 2 inches in diameter. I think it comes in different sizes.

Hornwort? Its a stem plant but does well as a floater. Easy to grow and a very fast grower

Riccia Fluitans (crystalwort). Careful what you wish for though, it can really take off.

Just don't get duck weed, you'll be very sorry. It's like a plague. Where I'm from, it's called "green cancer" if that gives you any indication about how quickly it spreads.
