I've been researching Dwarf and Pearl Gouramis since i may add some and many sites say to put floating plants in the tank. Do i really need to do this? I have heavily planted the back and sides of the tank with plastic plants only. Thanks.

IMO, no but they do help and I'm looking for some for my Three Spot tank and Betta tanks.

i have no floating plants in my gourami tank....they dont seem to mind....
i think you should do whatever makes the tank look good...i provide an open
space for feeding and have plenty for hiding....

good luck!!!

Your fish will survive without floating plants, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be happier.

All of my gouramis/bettas hang out under the floating plants (riccia, specifically) and use it to support their bubble nests. It's also a 'comfort zone' for these guys.

One of my pearl gouramis always hid at the bottom in a decoration. Once my planted tank provided more growth at the surface, this guy never went back into hiding!

There's no doubt labyrinth fish feel more secure with floating plants.
