Will my java fern be fine floating? The thread I used started to fall apart, so I untied them and let them just float around.

It will grow floating. I have never done this, because I like the looks of it on driftwood/rocks.

Try fishing line, super glue, or marine grade thread.

Yes, the “Crazy Glue” brand is the best. Make sure to take the decor out of the tank first, dry it off, then apply. When I attach java fern, I use a mixture of thread/fishing line and super glue.

Super glue should contain only cyanoacrylate

Search for cyanoacrylate gel
Krazy Glue has just that. :)

This is what I use @Holden On:

Its not a floating plant. At best it might try to grow leaves out of water...but with nothing to anchor to it might just rot not being able to balance.
Just tie it down with some string or metal twistys like on bread wrappers...THEN use super glue. The combo works because it keeps the plant from moving underwater letting the glue set better. Most people who glue dunk the plant before the glue dries solid...hit or miss.
Tie it down, add glue I say.
