I have set my fish tank up again after the last lot of fish were dying off one by one.

I emptied all the water out and filled it up again with water and dechlorinator. I added fish food to the water. The temperature is at 32 degrees. I have done the tests just now and they are all normal. It has been set up for 2 days now.

What should I do next?

What readings are you getting?

I think your temp is too high. I think the recommended average is 24/25 degrees.

What fish you got? :)

Thanks,
I have it set at 32 as I have no fish in the tank so to speed up bacteria growth.

Today my readings were:
pH - 7.6
Ammonia - 0 ppm
Nitrite - 0 ppm
Nitrate - 0 ppm

Now, I know this is how it should be in a cycled tank but the water in this tank has only been in two days.

I removed all the water after all £30 worth of my fish died, i then replaced it with fresh dechlorinated water switched on the heat and added fish flakes to start cycling the tank.

I really need help with this, been getting me down, The first time i have ever had tropical fish and lost them all within 48 hours, dont know whether to sell the tank or fight on.

Thanks,

The readings are all 0 because you are using fish food. it takes a lot longer for the fish food to decay and cause ammonia to begin the cycle than it would if you had a bottle of ammonia.
Keep the temp at 32C and if you can try and find some ammonia.

Any ideas why your old fish died? Did you cycle the tank before adding them last time?

ETA: stick with it, don't give up just yet

have you got any ammonia? if not, get some from boots, thats what i have been using and it has worked so far for me. i am looking at going into my qualifying week now. you need to get that ammonia upto 5ppm so it can start processing it to start your cycle off well. I am no professional but just saying what i have been doing and using.

this is also my first time at keeping tropical fish. im not the most patient of people but i think so far its been worth it.

good luck with your cycle and hope all goes well this time for you.

Thanks, I think i was too eager and used that crappy bacteria in a bottle that i got with my tank (nutrafin cycle) so i dont think it was fully cycled and thats why the fish died (I hope)

Thanks, what is the product called in boots? Will i need to discard the water again or not?

Thanks all,

The water should be fine, might just be a bit murky depending on how much fish food you put in there, but by the end of your cycle it should be pretty minging anyways lol.

I believe this is the Ammonia from Boots

If you just go into the shop and ask for that one they should be able to find it for you - you might get a few funny looks though

As Ryefish said, that is indeed the stuff im using, I have never put anything else in my tank while cycling except water conditioner when i filled/refilled the tank. It is a bit of hit and miss of finding the ammonia in certain boots stores, one boots i tried did not stock it but the next larger store i went to did. so you will need to search for a good boots or maybe mail order it. other places like homebase are said to stock ammonia but i use the boots one.

A new fishless cycle often runs quite well at around 30C. That is far too hot for most fish but is a good temperature for growing a colony of bacteria in your filter. Please read through the fishless cycle thread that we have right here on TFF. It will explain how much ammonia to add to the tank and what measurements to make to guide you through the process. Most people use the add and wait method rather than the add daily method so don't be surprised to find out that most of us end up more familiar with that one. I have a link to the article in my signature area.
