I have some algae eating shrimp that live on the driftwood in my tetra tank. They do a fair job, I have to give the driftwood a scrub about once every six months.

If you do not have any plants I know (some) plecos eat wood. If you have any plants the plecos might eat them so I would not go with them.

They would not eat enough that you would notice it I believe, but I imagine they would help keep it clean.

Good luck.

What size tank? Since wood forms a huge part of their diet any of the panaque species would do a fine job of keeping the bogwood clean as they continually rasp away at it, but since these fish are extremely messy and grow to around a foot they need a tank of at least 55 gallons.

Most plecos will do a decent job. Livebearers like platies and swordtails will eat food and algae growing on it. Cories will even take a sweep or two over it.
