at the moment i have 3 balloon mollies and 3 honey gourami. i plan to get: guppies, neon tetras, swordtail fish, corydoras catfish, perhaps clown loach and female betta fish. i will be doing more research first to make sure all of these fish can live happilly together of course!

i was wondering if there are any things i should buy from the fish shop to have on hand "just in case"? as the title says-a fish first aid kit!

sorry for so many posts!!

well, aqurium salt is always useful. thats the only thing i can think of because when my fish get sick, i just buy what they need the next day. most sicknesses dont kill them within a few days

Edit: why not just spend that you were planning to use on the medications and spend it on test kits so you can prevent them from getting sick?

thanks for your reply. i will be getting a test kit aswell, i just wondered if there was any sort of first aid kit that could be put together too. but i suppose your right-id have time to get the appropriate stuff from the shop if they got sick.

hi
id definitely get a test kit!!!!!! also i always have aquarium salt, melafix, pimafix, an anti internal bacteria med, a fungus & finrot med & a med for ich close at hand. what brands you get depends on where you live ie: a lot of stuff available in the usa we cant buy here in the uk. its good to have something like those ive mentioned cos its sods law your fish will get sick at very inopportune times - you'll notice it late at night or when the shops are closed etc etc.
did you cycle your tank before adding the fish you have??? (if you dont have a test kit it doesnt sound like it.)otherwise they are at risk from 'new tank' syndrome - where a build up of waste products can kill your fish........have a look at all the 'pinned' topics in this forum esp in the beginners section.
how long have you had your tank?? how long has it been running???all this stuff helps people answer your queries more easily & accurately.

would you advise salt if you corries in the same tank?
i wouldn't!

get "eSHa 2000" its the best multi-disease treatment around, treats almost anything :)

Thankyou for that!! im in the UK so if you could suggest some brands id appreciate it(il probably buy it all online anyway as local fish shop may be more expensive)

i only got the tank yesterday BUT fiances Dad has had the tank for about three years, with fish in. he got a bigger tank so we got his old one, with the water and gravel in it. he tested the water for us and said it was perfect and also told us he will show us how to test water etc. how often does it have to be tested? he said he does his once a week, does that sound about right?

im wondering about the aquarium salt too-i read that mollies need it but i started another thread asking about it as i also have the gouramis in the the tank with them. could i put quarium salt in a tank with gouramis? and other tropical fish such as corydoras, neon tetras etc?

i would not advise the aquarium salt if you have corries in the same tank as the mollies.
killed my corries because of this.
:grr:

I have a box of emergency items which i keep in my fishroom, it contains.

100ml of distilled or R/O water and a small bottle of pure tea tree oil (these are combined and used as a melafix substitue)
A bottle of Interpet anti whitespot +
A bottle of Interpet anti internal bacteria
Bottle of Waterlife Myxazin
Various sized dividers to fit most of my tanks so i can split fish up if needs be.
Cotton buds for swabbing medications directly onto fungus or damaged areas if needed.
Clove oil

well, corys can handle a tiny amount of salt, but you shouldnt use it on them. when you use salt, its best to get a separate tank unless all the fish benefit from it or get a container if you are going to give them a salt bath.

hi
ive got the range of 'aquarium pharmaceuticals' test kits, i cant remember exactly how much they cost each ( the different tests ie: ammonia, nitrite etc are in a separate box) i think around a £5 each, initially it costs a bit but i find my test kits last a long long time so well worth it.
i also meant to add as cfc has, i always have pure clove oil ( try boots) for humanely euthanasing distressed sick fish.
i also like esha 2000, interpets anti internal bacteria med & waterlifes protozin is good for ich if you have loaches & cant use anything else.
most meds are around £4-£5 but have a look at online shops cos thats where you'll get the best prices or pets at home are good for 'dry supplies' like meds if you have one nearby.
and i never use salt with our loaches or our corys but its useful if you have a small hospital tank to add with medications when you have isolated a fish.
