i had posted a thread about 4 weeks ago or so my fish were dying but with no symptoms no water problems etc then i noticed a small amount of white on one of my fish thought it was ich so treated it.

had no more deaths for almost 3 weeks so i decided to buy some neons. then wednesday i noticed my betta (only origional fish i had left - my baby  ) had a hole in its fin and some whitish stuff whrer the fin rests - so i went and got fin rot treatment and he died yesterday my frog died also bits of his skin looked like it was coming off (not like usually does when they flake off) then this morning another fish died

i have put in the treatment but is there anything else i can do? symptoms are /were white cotton looking thing on mouth hole in fins with white rim of hole

am i going to loose the whole tank??
i am sooo frustrated! :-( :S

thanks

It sounds like columnaris, not finrot. Columnaris is a bacterial infection that is very lethal. To treat this, you need to buy an antibiotic medicine. Maracyn is a really good one for this if you are in the US (*not Maracyn 2*). Also, lower the temperature in your tank, as this bacteria thrives in warm temperatures. You don't want to change it too fast though, as this will stress out the fish. No more than 2 degreese F or one degree C.

Also, you need to test your water quality, specifically for amonia and nitrIte. How big is your tank, and also, what types of fish do you have in there (and how many of each)

Here is a link wiht some more info in it for you http://www.flippersandfins.net/flexibacter.htm

Sounds like a bad case of columnaris to me as well, what's your location.

i'm in the uk
i have ph of 7 amonia nitrate and nitrite of 0 planted tank i have now one angel and 2 sucking loaches 5 neons and one african dwarf frog in a 60litre tank sorry i dont know what that is in gallons (US or UK) looking at the pictures on hte fin rot and the other disease the treatment i got is for it looked exactly the same pictures and symptom wise. i have been having a problem now for ever a month but there had been no visable symptoms up till now except one of the fish that died about 3 weeks ago had what looked like ich and its top lip was missing but it only took 24 hours for symptoms to show and then death
we dont have that med you mentioned in the uk
i have dropped the temp by one notch so it should reduce gradually
so if its what you say are they all gonna die?
i have never heard of columnaris before

Do you have a quarentine tank? If so i would recomend moving the sick fish. The white lips is another way columnaris can show, it is also refered to as mouth fungus. I know this is contagous, and unfortunately, in the UK, the fish meds aren't that great. the antibacterial meds are pretty weak from everything I have heard.

Good luck!

i had a look on the site and searched picturesw of fish with columnaris but none of them looked like what my fish did

i dont have a quarentine tank but none of my fish have any sympotms now the ones which di d are the ones that died the others seem fine but so did the other one it all just happens so quickly

i cant i have just got a digital camera but dont know how to work it with the computer!! i know useless but do you mean the ones without symptoms or the dead ones?

The one with symptoms. A white lip is columnaris (i know i'm talking about the dead one).

Here is a web page that has lots of disease pix you can look at if you want. http://www.fishpalace.org/Disease.html

it didnt have a white lip but a small cotton looking ball really tiny looked like it was just resting on the lip i just went up to get my treatment which says it is to treat anti fungus and finrot which is also known as mouthrot/mouth fungus - flexibacter which according to the website is columnaris!! so confusing why so many names?!?!

the treatment i have is for the symptoms of cotton wool like growths on the body and fins eaten away and eroded face regions

so y were correct you clever people

it seems i have the right meds but just hope the other fish are ok

my dead babies have went to the white porcelain heaven

You have columnaris and mouth fungus, plus that angel fish needs a 30gal tank.
