Hello guys and gals. I would like your opinions on my stocking ideas. I have 48 litre tank and was thinking of breeding guppies. I was going to get 6 females and 2 males. I was also thinking about getting a beta to go in with them, would that be ok? I am going to plant the tank really well too.

Dunno bout the betta they aint great to keep with other flowy finned fish, would mistake the guppys as a threat possibly try and kill them

Ok so it would be best to just keep the 8 guppies and wait for some babies?

Yeah I think the general concensus is that guppies & bettas aint a good mix. You could possibly get some cories, they breed like rabbits too.

If your plans are to breed the guppies what are the long term plans for this? For example when you have a batch of babies and they get to be adults where do they go? Some LFS wont take them and a 10g isnt really big enough to keep more than a brood as adults. I would stick to just males and enjoy the colour :)

When the babies are big enough i would be giving them to people who wanted them and i know i can trust and pet shops that are good and know what they are doing.

kk, just be careful is all 10g will become quickly over stocked with breeding guppies. They could quite easily be on the 3rd or 4th batch before you can move the first batch of babies on.

I am actually thinking of buying another tank for the parents. I was thinking a 87 litres tank to keep the parents in and the 47 litres on for the babies

Believe me i had 6 females and within 4 months i had 400 fry!! :shout:

I ended up setting up a fry tank made from a plastic 90l storage box just to keep the fry in! and doing daily w/c is hard work

Also i wouldn't keep a betta with guppies, you'll ask for trouble, especially in a small tank like that...

Might be good to start with 2 females & 1 male and see how they go,and maybe add a few smaller fish....

Ok i will get maybe 3 females and 1 male. See what happens.
