Well I went to one of my LFS on Saturday and had a look at all the bettas of course and I stumbled across one poor little guy in with some swordtails, he had no fins left apart from his pectorals (think thats what they're called) and his two ventrals, all the rest were nipped right down to the body! He was swimming about fine but I spent around ten minutes looking at him and debating do I do the right thing or not as I dont really have the space! Anyway I decided I couldnt leave him there so I asked the assistant for him he reluctantly agreed to sell me him for half price at £1.99 but I just had to take him. I picked up some Methyline blue (spelling sorry) and they knocked the price down as it was for him! I called up my mum on my way home telling her that I was going to bring up a fish for my grow out tank (decided my fry could hold on another week in a 10 gal)! Anyway I got back to mine and placed the bag in my sorority tank as my mum was out so couldnt go to hers for another couple of hours! Boy was this guy feisty he was constantly flaring at my girls and prowling around his bag for a beat up fish he was very lively! I was going to call him Spirit but I noticed that he had a deformed gill which constantly stuck out so he's been named Quazimodo! I have absolutely no idea what colour he will turn out as he was very pale but looked like he was lilac! I eventually took him to my mums and apparently he has settled in well! I wont see him now until the weekend when I take up my fry! I have had to get him a container to place in the tank as cant afford to set up a new tank for him but until I can get to my mums at the weekend he has the rule of the 2ft tank!

Any one got any tips on what to feed to help him grow his fins back quicker? At the moment he is eating high protein food and I will be taking up daphnia and bloodworms for my fry too!

gills that stick out can be caused by gill flukes, have a closer look next time you see him.

I didnt see anything sticking out! I will have another look when I get to see him I take it I put gills instead of the gill flap (sorry) but I'll check anyway for gill flukes! Whats the best treatment for them if he has them?

Good luck with him! I rescued a nipped up one too and put meds in then quit as soon as I saw he was basically ok apart from the appearance issues. N point in stressing him more. I used bloodworms to get him started eating again. He's a picky kid tho and still won't eat pellets. He loves these Ocean Nutrition shrimp flakes so that's what he eats. His fins are coming back but I dunno if they're ever gonna look exactly right. What the heck we love them anyways right? You're the best for helping him out. Keep us posted.

Thanks guys! He's eating his pellets apparently he loves them! My mum said he darts to the front of the tank when she comes in the room! She sounds ever so pleased when she talks about him and she said she wouldnt want one! I'll take him some bloodworms and daphnia up at the wkend I'll also get the camera back off my friend too! Hmmm hope the water is no longer blue and that he'll stay still long enough my others all come out blured!

One of the boys I got from Synirr has a gill that sticks out permantly, like he's in
constant half flare mode. I named him Willy Wonka because he's got a wonky gill
It is a birth defect, so if you don't find anything wrong, it could be that too.
Just gives them more character...as if they need it!

Sounds like your mom has fallen under his spell so now she's one of us! He's coming along really well and I bet he's feeling good he's got a happy new home. I tried a pellet with mine again this morning and he acts mad I'd even try that with him. haha Good going. Maybe he'll like his picture being taken?

Yep it does look like she is starting to come under the spell! It wont be long now til I try to get a pic along with a pic of my fry! Wonder what colour he is?
