Hi all,

I have a fully cycled tank which has been running for 8 months and tonight I found my first little neon tetra floating dead at the top of the tank :(

I did a water test first and stats are all fine:

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 20-40

No changes have been made to the tank and I didn't notice any problems with any of my fish :(

I had a look at the dead one at its colour was still bright, fins where fine and no marks on him. All the other fish are active and all seem fine.

Have I just been unlucky and likely he was the weak one of the group?

Thanks
Pete

how did you cycle your tank, fish used for fish in cycling or survive ammonia or nitrite spikes often have shortened life spans, or is it possible he was just old,

Tank was fish less cycled but these guys where the 2nd lot in my tank.

I'm hoping it was age but it was bought the same time as the others.

could be just bad luck, unless you have more deaths i wouldnt worry too much, just do a water change

Thanks, I was hoping that. How soon shall I do the change? Will tomorrow evening do or shall I do it tonight and is it possible my normal 30% weekly I should do?

ideally i would do it as soon a possible, how big is your tank, 30 or 40% should be ok

Ive heard neons prefer a mature tank...never do greatly in a newly set up tank...even at 8 months old id say thats fairly new...possibly the reason?

It's a 200l I normally do a weekly 60l change.

EDIT: Just done a normal 60l change so will keep an eye on things.
Thanks again.

Thanks for all your advice everyone. Kept a close eye on them all since and all seem fine. Must have juts been the little guys time!

Thanks again!
