Hello,

I have three male guppies and two female guppies. They are separated by a divider, and I am trying to move the females to a new tank soon.

For the last week or so, I thought one of the males might have had a swollen abdomen, but I also thought it could just be fat. However, I just looked in the tank, and I noticed it’s tail looks damaged at the ends. I have no idea if this is fin rot or if one of the other fish was nipping at it. Please help!

Hi.

To me, it looks more like fin damage caused by nipping. Carry out daily water changes of 50% and treat with salt. Do you have any other fish in the tank? If so, what are they? ( It'll affect the dosage of salt. )

It looks like moderate fin nipping to me. Do large daily water changes. (%40-%65) Do this for as long as it takes for things to clear up. You can try adding salt if things don't get better.

Thank you both for your responses.
In that tank, I have three male guppies, two female guppies, and one mystery snail.
I don’t think I can do that many water changes and salt because I am treating the tank with General Cure at the moment. One of the females is ill, and no one can identify the issue, so I’m trying to treat for a lot of things.

Personally I would not treat a tank for an illness that was not known. But in my experience plenty of fresh clean water is the best medicine for fish. If it was me I would go with @FishkeeperLinz 's advice. I have never used salt, or needed to but (IMO) large daily water changes are always the first action to take unless something specific has been identified.

Thank you so much.
Also, do you agree that it is just nipping?
