Ok, Im getting to upgrade my HOB's for a Fluval 304 or 404. Has anyone used/using either of these? If so, what is your opinion?

forget fluvals they are pants.
if it is in your buget go for eheims
if not go for tetra tec filters as they are designed specificvally to be in compertition with eheim but at a fluval price tag.

If it were me I'd go eheim all the time.

If you plan on being involved in aquatics long term go for the Eheim, you won't regret it. I've heard of Eheim canisters running strong for over 15 years with the occasional impeller or shaft replacement.

whats wrong with fluvals

mines only been running a few months so its been fine but are they pants long term?

i really like it tho, good output and easy to clean. even says when its blocked up and needs a clean.

Never used them personally but I've heard plenty of people who have had problems with bad connections and dodgy motors.

TBH my only regret with my Fluvals is not forking out a little bit more and going external. Not really had a problem that I've ever noticed, although a 3yr old 204 I have does need a prod on the impeller to get going again if you unplug it. Also I did have a small Fluval powerhead give up the ghost after about 5 yrs, but I didn't really need it so didn't bother finding out why or if it was fixable.

Never really considered this TBH, now I'm wondering!

I've used Fluvals for years with no problems. I still have the 03 series running, and have added the 04 series to other tanks. They do a great job as well.

The biggest problems with fluvals (external) are:

1) They are a pain to get the syphon started again.

2) They have a habit of blowing the o-ring seal and depositing most the tank on the floor.

3) not as cataclysmic, but they can just develop leaks

Fortunately I have only had to deal with 1 and 3. But ask CFC about Fluvals, he's had great "fun" with them.

I recently started buying second hand eheims and they are amazing, the best filtration I use after my wet/dry.

Can't comment on other filters, though as mentioned, if you can afford it, go Eheim.
