I previously had an Aqueon filter with the funky honeycomb blue plastic that is the supposed biofilter and a carbon insert. I just got an AC50 (36 gallon tank) and I cannot put that stuff in there as it will not fit.

Would it be ok to just put them in the tank and float/sink them for a week or so? I don't see why it would be a problem, but I also don't know squat about this so I thought I'd ask someone more knowledgeable than I. Please let me know if it is ok to just plop them in the tank with the fish or if there is some reason that I shouldn't. Thank you.

Yeah should be no problem on just adding it to your tank. What I would do is maybe put it in a stocking(net) and weigh it down close to your filter intake(this way some of the good bacteria gets sucked up into your new filter). Why I think your should use a stockings is when things start breaking off, you might have a real dirty tank.

Cant you chop a bit of your old media off with some scissors & bung it in your new filter?

I suppose I could cut the bio filter part --- it is just plastic. I'll give it a shot.
