when we rebuilt our pond we also replaced our filter pump with two slightly smaller ones and also doubled our filter volume. the problem we have is that the pump inlets keep getting gunked up as the pond does get a debris falling into it. we also added a wetland with papyrus and water lilies as this attracts a host of birds and small animals like lizards and frogs. what can i do that is cheep and easy to make that will stop the pumps blocking. or is it just that the new pumps are not strong enough to get through all the waste

added; the pond is stocked with koi and goldfish.
the one pump pumps somewhere in the region of 1400 l/h
the other 600 l/h

One way to solve this is to attach a hose to the filter intake and run the hose to the deepest part of the pond. Then cover the hose int several inches of gravel. The gravel keeps the debris away form the hose. The larger the gavel bed area the lower the chance of clogging. A once yearly vacuum of debris from to the top of the gravel will help keep it clear.

the pump is situated before the filter and actually gave up the ghost yesterday. so the inlet is the pump.
