little bit of background: My 10 gallon tank has been set up for a year. Fishlessly cycled from march to June last year...so I've had a cycled stocked tank running for 9 months. heat is set at 82.

Original stocking was 2 mollies, 3 platys and an apple snail. Of the original stocking I have 1 fish left, the male platy. I also have 1 of about 10 fry left. Everything has died off one at a time including the snail.

Here's the cycle. I do a water change and within days, 1 fish gets a threadlike thing sticking out of their anus. VERY long and clear thing. The thread thing disappears, and eventually the fish gets very thin and ill looking, and eventually dies. Perhaps its coincidence that every fish has gone through this cycle within a week of a water change but I dont know that so Im including it.

Yesterday I woke up to a major gunking of EVERYTHING by a white substance..looked like dissolving toilet paper in the tank and it was everywhere. There have NO changes in the tank except the snail died and now Im scraping algae with a scraper and I did just buy a new brand of food. Those are the ONLY changes so I dont know what that white gunk was

Hence why no water stats..water stats are pointless to give since I did 100% change yesterday to remove the gunk. I moved the fish to a new tank with old tank water, emptied the 10 gallon of everything, rinsed the rocks and fake plants in hot water several times. I swished both the filter media and the sponge filter in old tank water, and refilled with dechlorinated tap water. The new water was very cloudy until this morning but it is fine now. However, now my adult male platy has the string thing hanging from him. Just want to note here that nothing had died in the tank since the beginning of January which has been a good long stretch. Now, I did a water change again and the string thing is back UGH.

I did buy a medicine but havent used it because Im not sure what this thing is or how exactly to treat the tank. The box says to remove the filter media but that would mean removing the filter media and the sponge filter which means I'll lose my bacteria colony and have to cycle all over again? is that right? Or can I just leave the filter media in and treat the tank with the general cure I bought?

What I bought says : General Cure anti parasitic fish medication and its by API.

It does sound like an internal parasitic problem (long, stringy white poo is a common sign of this, along with sudden weight loss, lethargy etc) so, yes, that medication you have should do the trick although I've never used it personally (I use a different brand). When it says to remove filter sponge, I think you will find this means any of the charcoal type filter sponges. You shouldn't have to remove normal filter sponges that contain your filter bacteria or they will die off and you will then have to recycle the tank.

I had a similar problem two months ago and it turned out to be a parasite - do you have a picture of the offending article?

This was my thread with pics ( Plec problems ) for scale the plecs were about 25mm long - sorry if it makes you queezy.

I cleared the problem eventualy with Parazin, but only after losing around 20 plec fry and 2 fully grown silver sharks

Hope this helps.

nope ...not even close to what I've seen in my fish.

What they have is as thin as a hair, if not thinner...and no forked tail.

I went to look at the fish again, and the thread is gone. If cycle holds true that fish will be dead in a week now.

I have no problem treating the tank...Now I just need to figure out for sure if I have to remove the filters I have before I treat.
