occasionally i throw a slice or two of cucumber into my fish tanks. none of the fish seem interested, i'm not even sure the plecos nibble on it. only the snails like it. am i doing something wrong? or are my fish just addicted to flakes and don't know a good thing when they see it?

It took my fish a few times to get used to new food. Do you weigh it to the bottom or just let it float?

Plecos will eat for sure if you leave them there over night. I've had hard time feeding them to other species though. Mbunas are supposed to eat them as well, but they are absolutely not interested in eating them.

I find that if you blanch it, they tend to eat faster.

i let it float so that they see it but after a while it sinks. i've also weighed it to the bottom. both ways they don't take interest.

should i cut the pieces up smaller?

Smaller pieces aren't necessary - just keep them in there for few days (monitor the condition as you don't want it to competely spoil under water). I find that they don't generally eat much during the first day, and when it starts to get soft, they start to eat up much quicker...

I take the seeds out first and leave them in there - in few days, there's nothing left for me to take out...

Weighted is better. The plecs won't touch it if it's floating around.

I find that my fish are far keener on courgette (zucchini) than cucumber, and it's more nutritious too.

Also try peeled grapes and crushed peas (not canned)

That's what I thought until I witnessed this (should have made a movie out of it!)

I was observing a floating cucumer, thinking grrr I need to remove it again! Then I saw one of the bristlenose swim straight up, sticks to the piece and pulls it down to the substrates and continues to eat...

I'm pretty sure this is not the first time they have done it by judging from her fluency... ;)

Of course that doesn't change the fact that weighted is better!
